When Will They Ever Learn

The Chevrons fans are up in roar after ZC`s decision to sack Heath Streak and his whole technical team after the team`s upset in the World Cup qualifier`s. The skipper Graeme Cremer was also not spared and local fans are not happy at the decision taken by ZC as they`ve organized a Streak Must Stay protest on the 6th o April at the ZC offices.

Zimbabwe Cricket was reproached for the manner in which Streak was sacked that is through an email which stated that they should resign or either consider themselves fired. It seems ZC has a bit of issues going on as we had the same problem with the sacking of Makhaya Ntini even Dave Whatmore as all the coaches have that sentiment of helping out that clueless kid on the block who always ends up blaming the coach yet he`s just not good enough.

Speaking in his sacking Streak said, for everything I have given Zimbabwe Cricket, as a former player and a coach to be given an email with no full explanation or even the courtesy of a hearing is something I didn`t expect Streak told EspnCricInfo. A few months ago we had the same problem as Ntini called ZC `not honest` after they had announced his `retirement with regret` only for us to figure out that he was in fact asked to step down.

After Streak`s firing The ZC statement read: “It is important that the public understands why the ZC Board has taken these decisions. The actions taken by the Board are only and purely as a result of the very unsatisfactory performances and results of the Zimbabwe National team, the Zimbabwe ‘A’ team and the Zimbabwe Under-19 team.

“The Board believes that things have come to a point where bad performances and bad results cannot be absorbed with a shrug of the shoulders and considered as business as usual.
“The stakeholders, the fans and in fact the entire Nation of Zimbabwe deserve better, much better in terms of performances and results from their National cricket teams.
“The ZC Board has not taken these decisions lightly. It well understands the professional and personal ramifications that this will have on the impacted staff and can appreciate and sympathise with their disappointments.

“The Board also realises that the impacted staff all worked hard and tried to perform their duties to the best of their abilities.
“However, the Board also realises that their best was not good enough. Certain important decisions taken by senior technical staff do, in the Board’s opinion, call into question the judgment and ability of the concerned staff to make such crucial decisions.
“This has resulted in a collective loss of confidence in the technical teams.
“The National team’s performances in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, as well as in the Bangladesh (won one, lost three) and Afghanistan (won one, lost six) tours immediately preceding the tournament, were highly unsatisfactory.”

It is true that the Chevrons haven`t been performing of late hiring and firing is surely not the way to addressing that problem as we have fired all sorts of coaches including a World Cup winning coach in Dave Whatmore but the result has never changed because the team has remained the same. If anything the Chevrons have gotten worse and we wonder when Zimbabwe Cricket will ever learn that they are simply putting too much pressure on the coaches to deliver with a team that won`t just do it.

Apparently ZC were also looking at the results of Zimbabwe A and the Under 19 but looking at the Chevrons they haven’t performed well in quite a while now and we`re still to put in place proper structures in place. The Chevrons are struggling for new talent to come up and replace the experienced guys like Masakadza who has been playing for 17 years but still we don`t have proper grassroots structures to ensure that flow of talent is coming up to the national team. The experienced guys haven`t been performing when they are expected to and now the pressure is then put on the new guys who`re not really getting that regular gametime to ry and work out a miracle  This is therefore a greater problem in place that we still have to address and hiring and firing won`t do it as we have to sort the team itself out before we go out and hire the new coach.
