Castle Lager Matchday 2 Round-Up

Image
Perkins-Tino Bare The biggest match in matchday 2 of the Castle Lager premier soccer league was the match at the National Sports Stadium pitting Mark Harrison`s side Caps United who struggled to gain a 1-0 win against a resilient FC Platinum side as they maintained their 100 percent start to the new Castle Premiership season. Left back Ronald Pfumbidzai came through for his team with wonder goal 16 minutes before the end. Their gaffer Mark Harrison could not hide his side`s 100 percent start to the season as he went on to say “Six points in two games we are in front of our targets I set for myself already which is good,” Harrison said after the game.“It gives us a little bit of breathing space in our next game maybe. But you know look; it was not a prettiest performance; we were playing against one of the best sides in the league. They are very comfortable with the ball. In the first half we gave them too much room and time to play but we closed up a little bit in the second h

Third-Time Luck for the Cheetahs?

Perkins-Tino Bare The Zimbabwe sevens` rugby team the Cheetahs got their battle this morning to a flying satart as they beat Guyana 36-0, as they seek that much coveted HSBC core statusover this weekend in Hong Kong as they play in the Qualifiers which would determine the core member status of the winner of the round of fixtures. The Cheetahs who could have not asked for better preparations as they got the chance to train with the World`s best in the South African Side the Blitzebokke at their world-class University of Stellenbosch training facilities om South Africa go into this series with their heads held high as is left to do on the pitch as this time the administrators have outdone their part and its now left to the players to prove their worth. The Cheetahs kicked off their campaign in what would be their third attempt with an assignment bytharshing Guyan 36-0 and they will take on Tonga two hours later which would wrap up their encounters for the day. ZC Heartbreak Can it Get Any Worse?

Perkins-Tino Bare “I played too much cricket in my life to fall back now on ‘what ifs’ and ‘maybes’ so, like the players, I will accept that we were not good enough. One win in six matches is immense disappointment. The future might be bleak, with qualification almost certainly required for the next ICC Cricket World Cup, and ZC facing a battle to attract fixtures in the short and medium term, either home or away, the players will need to embrace the fact that their futures lie in their hands” , Alastair Campbell told standard sport. So as our boys left the center stage back into the dark, gloomy background of ZC to most it was more of the same, `so close yet so far` but this time it was different the guys represented us quite well during the course of the whole tournament despite leaving with just one victory and one would be tempted to agree that if Dav Whatmore is to get more time with the team he is to build he should therefore build a formidable side indeed. Au Revoir Taylor-Made Chevron!

Image
By Perkins-Tino Bare It was about ten years ago and the venue was the Harare Sports Club. Zimbabwe was chasing down a target set by Bangladesh if I`m not mistaken and we needed 6 runs from 2 balls to wrap-up the match with he himself Brendan Taylor at the crease. First ball came in and it was an extra which saw us needing 5 runs from 1 ball to wrap-up the match. The bowler came in furiously and as calm as a rock Brendan Taylor smashed the ball for a six which then saw us winning the match. In a day that he described as `definitely a sense of sadness` Brendan Taylor bade farewell to the Zimbabwe National Cricket team as he played his last match calling curtains on a 11 year tenure not much could be said about his departure as we can all imagine the huge gap that is going to be left behind prior to his absence. Brendan Taylor took up a 3 year contract with English county side Nottinghamshire as a utility player and this then forbids him to turn out for Zimbabw

Zim`s Afrobasket Qualification Unravelled

By Perkins-Tino Bare Zimbabwe men`s basketball team last month qualified for the Afrobasket championships after they beat neighbours and bitter rivals South Africa 66-64 in overtime. The sad thing was that though the qualification was historic for the team not muach has been said ever since. The games which are set to be held in in Tunisia from 19-30 August later this year and t he coach will now be looking forward to the the likes of Julian Mavunga and Vitalis Chikoko, who are expected to add depth to his squad as the two based in the USA and Europe, emerge as potential fits to coach Gilbert's team Mozambique and Zimbabwe became the 10th and 11th teams to qualify for AfroBasket 2015 with Zimabwe`s qualification being its first ever , joining hosts Tunisia, reigning champions Angola , Egypt , Uganda , Cote d'Ivoire , Morocco , Cape Verde , Cameroon and Mali . Two more qualifying places are up for grabs, and another three will be determined through the attribution

Luck of the Irish Carries the Day

Image
Luck of the Irish Carries the Day By Perkins-Tino Bare The Chevrons needed a six and on the other hand Ireland needed a wicket but in the end Zimbabwe Cricket`s hopes of making it to the quarters came to a brutal ending as they lost to Ireland by a mere 5 runs. In a must-win match for the Chevrons, it was just not their day as a couple of dropped catches and the top order once again failing to set up a good foundation for the chase saw the Chevron fire, which has been burning throughout the tourney fail to flicker a blaze at the Bellerive Oval.       After winning the toss Zimbabwe sent in Ireland to bat on the flat pitch and without the injured skipper Elton Chigumbura, Brendan Taylor was to lead the charges and he went into the match both as skipper and wicket-keeper. The Irish who bolster a county experience in their squad of 2/3 sent in Paul Stirling who paired up with his skipper William Porterfield as they looked forward to set a secure target against the Ch
