India Name Squad For Zim Tour

By Perkins-Tino Bare

The Indian squad set to tour Zimbabwe was released and it the spiceboys released a relatively weakened side to face the Chevrons from the 11th of June. The squad, released yesterday includes veteran MS Dhoni and some Faiz Fazal who plies his trade out in India but they chose the same 16 men for both the T20 and the ODI format of the tour with the first match slated for the 11th of June at the Harare Sports Club.

Faiz Fazal is the surprise pick on the team as he made a name for himself in the local league. The 30-year-old is an opening batsman from Vidarbha who scored a match-winning 127 for the Rest of India in the second innings of the Irani Cup against Mumbai in a match played earlier this year. Before that he had made also made 312 runs at 52.00 in a tournament which came on the heels of his 559 runs in eight trophy matches. He also scored an excellent 112-ball 100 in the Deodhar Trophy final and he seems to have made a name for himself amongst the local cricketing circles in India in these trophy matches and t shoukld a good thing to note that none of these tournaments are really acrre.

Though Faiz Fazal may seem to hoard loads of experience on the domesticc front for the spiceboys, MS Dhoni still remains the most exerienced in the squad as he has boasts more experience than the rest
of the 15 guys in the squad. With 83 Tests and 28 T20Is MS Dhoni will have a bit of work in leading this relatively young side which is going to play the Chevrons who`re more experienced than them.

Speaking on the decision to put Dhoni in charge of the side, Indian chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil said, "Dhoni has retired from the longer format and we selectors felt that this is the best opportunity for youngsters to have someone like Dhoni, who has ample experience," he said. "Dhoni himself was very keen to tour with the youngsters so I think it is a very good sign and a good help for the youngsters, who are going to be part of the Zimbabwe tour. No one has been rested. No one wrote to BCCI or called us (to say) they were not available or they should be rested. It was the decision of the selection committee to pick a young side for Zimbabwe and another side for West Indies." he then went on to add.

While it was clear from the onset that most of the Indian players will be rested especially with the IPL ending only a fortnight before the tour, MS Dhoni`s inclusion will be rather interesting as he is set to bring nothing but class to the young squad. Most of the Indian players were rested just as expected and right now its up to the Chevrons to bring their best to the play. Fazal is however the only player in the team withou a current running IPL contract.

With most of the players coming fresh and out of a new season of the IPL India should be stronger in the T20 format which will be played at the same venue. "This year we wanted variation in our bowling department, that is why Yuzvendra Chahal found a place," Patil said. "IPL as a tournament is important, it is a BCCI tournament and we know that all international players participate in the IPL, which makes it very competitive cricket. So it is important for the selectors to look into the performances of the IPL."

India ODI and T20 squad MS Dhoni (capt & wk), KL Rahul, Faiz Fazal, Manish Pandey, Karun Nair, Ambati Rayudu, Rishi Dhawan, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Barinder Sran, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Jaydev Unadkat, Yuzvendra Chahal
