Fairytale Run Ends For Chevrons

The Chevrons are now all but out of the 2019 Cricket World Cup as they succumbed to their second consecutive defeat in the tournament which was enough to deny them a spot in England next year. This was the UAE`s first victory over a Test nation as they won the match by three runs in a match which was rather affected by rain.

Zimbabwe won the toss and they elected to field and the UAE set them a target of 235/7 in 47.5 overs. Rameez Shahzad was once again the start for the UAE as he had a score of 59 while Gulam Shabber chipped with a score of 40. In all cases the Arabs got of to a strong start as they rushed on to a score of 180-4 in 38 overs. They still had the wickets and the overs and they were well on their way to posting a 250+ score before the rains came to the rescue of the Chevrons.

The target was then revised to 230 from 40 overs as the rain threatened to all but spoil the mood for the Zimbabwean fans who knew that a win would send them through to the World Cup. The Chevrons would have wanted the aggressive approach of Cephas Zhuwawo but he was missing from action as Hamilton Masakadza opened the batting together with Solomon Mire. Masakadza came in 17 years after making his test debut in 2001 but all that experience counted for nothing as soon the Chevrons were reeling at 45-3 after losing Mire for 6 Masakadza for 7 and also Taylor who was showing glimpses for 15.

It was then up to the young PJ Moor to try and steady the ship together with Sean Williams who was coming from a finger injury. The two played their part as they made a strong stand of 79 before Williams took it up again with Sikandar Raza as they had a stand of 61. But after Williams was gone it was all but over for the Chevrons as Cremer was soon out for a duck. And it was then left to Craig Ervine and Kyle Jarvis to try and wrap up the match but soon it was dead silence in a packed Harare Sports Club and soon they were requiring 19 from 12 before it was 15 from the last over.

Its back to the drawing board for the Chevrons as up to now we have fired all sorts of coaches including a World Cup winning coach in Dave Whatmore. We`ve also gotten to see Chingoka stepping down from the head of Zimbabwe Cricket as he was supposedly causing all the mess but still nothing has changed. Right now it`s almost 20 years later after Zimbabwe Cricket was shaken after the millenium and we`re still talking of reforming the team. In the last match of the super six stage Afghanistan play Ireland today in a match which should decide the second team to qualify for the World Cup before the final of Sunday which in which West Indies already booked a spot.
