Zim Blown Away In Final ODI

By Perkins-Tino Bare
The Chevrons failed to build on their recent win as they were once again inconsistent on the field of play as they lost the final ODI against Pakistan yesterday in a match payed at the Harare Sports Club showing absolutely no resitance in the process.
In a rather boring final played at the Harare Sports Club yesterday, the Chevrons were a totally different team in the final ODI having won the 2nd ODI by 5 runs D\L method, as they went on to lose by 7 wickets in final of the 3 match series played at the Harare Sports Club with 96 balls remaining for the visitors. .
Pakistan won the toss once again and they decided to send the Chevrons in to bat and we all thought that they had just missed it once again. The decision to drop Hamilton Masakdza turned out to be a ggod one as Chamu Chibhabha and Richmond Mutumbami had an opening partnership of 89 before Chibhabha`s wicket started up the domino fall. We have seen this one too many times and once again its just a sheer case of inconsistency from our batsman.
At the peak of the disaster Zimbabwe lost a total of 9 wickets adding just 65 runs to 18.5 overs of spin. So if we were to play a T20 right now in which we would be facing an all spin attack we should therefore be very concerned. The lads were terrible to spin and this is an area that should be addressed within the team. This time round the chief proponent of our demise was one Bilal Asif who had a total of 5 wickets in is alloted 10 overs.
Throughout the series it has always been one person who propels the demise of our whole team in an innings. This is more than just a case of them having a good day for it was Wahab Riaz in the 2nd ODI with 4 wickets, Yasir Shah with 6 wickets in the 1st ODI and the point here is that surely these guys would have found out a weak spot in our batting and then attack attack attack that same spot till they`ve cleaned out our whole batting line-up. This then points us back the batting coach is they are doing enough in terms of getting wrongs right for surely this has to be more or less the same recurrent mistake being exploited here by the Pakistani bowlers.
Also when batsmen are posting figures of 4 (Chari) 5 (Williams) 0 (Chigumbura) 2(Raza) 4(Mutombodzi) 8 (Waller) then something needs to be done for this is simply unacceptable. This is schoolboy stuff being produced by these guys and one then starts to wonder if the win on Saturday was all just a damp squib. These guys seem to be producing results when they perform at their very best which they cannot do consistently and we may as well need an overhaul of the team here. What we have are just glimpses of what they `re capable to do on the field but we are then denied that experience as they go ahead to disappoint when it matters the most.
Right now Brian Chari is being roped in and he has showed us some good glimpses of the good batsman he can develop to become. He is never shy of trying out shots again and again but then what we need is to make ensure that we get to live these glimpses that we are seeing and not just end there. This is one person who still needs to develop as a player and this also includes all the youngsters that are likely to get a chance in the series against Ireland starting this Friday at the same venue.
We need a bit more discipline from the players themselves and this especially comes together with the mental aptitude to be able to not only handle the pressure but to also dig ourselves out of trouble. Looking at the games that we are still yet to play Ireland and Afghanistan are our best shots at gaining those much needed points and right now it is absolutely a scramble as they also want to win those series.
Zimbabwe now regroup to face Ireland for 3 ODI`s and 1 4-Day Match starting this Friday at the Harare Sports Club.
