Chevrons Seal Series Win

BY Perkins-Tino Bare
Zimbabwe Cricket sealed their 3 match ODI series against Ireland as they won the 2nd ODI by 5 wickets that is after having won the 1st ODI by 2 wickets in matches played at the Harare Sports Club on Friday and Sunday respectively.
Craig Ervine starred in the 2nd ODI as he had 101 not out hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes in the process. Ervine and Sean Willliams had a strong 3rd wicket partnership that took the Chervrons from 51-2 to 149-3 which was the epitome of the Zimbabwean innings.
Sean Williams also chipped in with 43 as ChamuChibhabha had a comfortable 30 in an innings that saw most of our batsmen getting double figures except for our skipper Elton CHigumbura who had 4 runs .
On the bowling department the technical team has been experimenting with Wellington Masakadza and he has not disaapointed them so far as he has been able to get a wicket in both the innigns that he has played. Tinashe PAnyangara, Chamu Chibhabha and Sikander Raza were also able to get wickets in the match that was played yesterday at the Harare Sports Club. In terms of their economy they were all in about the same range as they conceded figures of 40 to 50 in their 8 9 overs they bowled on the day. Sikander Razaz however bowled 3 wides on the day and it could be something he needs to improve on.
Having been sent in to bat first Ireland set a target of 268 but the Chevrons showed composure in their chase as they wrapped up the match with 9 balls remaining winning it by 5 wickets. The manner in which the target was chased down showed the difference that lies in terms of quality when it comes to the nations.
The Chevrons had earlier won the 1st ODI by 2 wickets with 6 balls remaining as Sikander Raza ensured that they made it off to a comfortable win in the 3 match series. The win in the 1st ODi was important as it laid a solid foundation to then wrap up the series in the 2nd ODI which they did yesterday.
Craig Ervine once again starred in the 1st ODI as he is showing an appetite for the lesser nations as it were. Together with Sikander RAzqa they had half-centuries as they had identical scores of 60 on the day.
Having won the toss, the Chevrons’ skipper Elton Chigumbura elected to field sending the Irish to bat. Ireland then set a target of 219 which was never going to be enough on any given day. THe Chevrons chased it down well with Sean Williams and Craig Ervine with 3rd wicket partnership of 54 which was the highest on the day. THe latter also had a stand with Sikander Raza of 28 which then ensured that we made it over the line safely.
The series win was Zimbabwe’s first in 2 years and what the Chevrons need to do at this pointing time is to thank the Irish for once again turning Harare Sports Club into a winning fortress by thumping them heavily in the 3rd ODI which is set to be played at the same venue tomorrrow.
