Ham Ton Stirs Up Chevron Triumph over Sri Lanka

By Perkins-Tino Bare
Lasith Malinga could not save Sri Lanka as the Chevrons thumped Sri Lanka by a magnificent 7 wickets in a warm up match played today at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln in the second warm up match for the Chevrons as they continued with their good form which has raised the hopes of its already disappointed fans.
Sri Lanka went in to bat first with Lahiru Thirmanne and Kumar Sangakkara at the crease for Sri Lanka but Kumar Sangakkara soon departed for a paltry 8 runs in the third over as the Chevrons struck early after Sean Williams caught off the bowling of Tianshe Panyagara. Mahela Jawardena then came in hoping to steady the ship and quite rightly managed to do so as they managed to reach figures of 72/2 after the departure of Lahiru Thirimane after he was run out from the efforts of Tawanda Mupariwa and Sean Williams.  Jawardena soon became the next victim of Tawanda Mupariwa who had an economy rate of 4.2 on the day.
The Chevrons kept winning the crucial wickets as they had Sri Lanka at 85/3.  Dimuth Karunaratne then looked to have steadied the ship as he was getting the runs for Sri Lanka with 3 fours and Jayawardena with 5, Sri Lanka looked set to recover from the false start and come back to set a respectable target. Chandimal soon departed which saw them sitting on figures of 149/4 as they looked set to set a huge target for the Chevrons.
Jeevan Mendis then came in for a brilliant innings as he posted 51 from 51 balls with 4 fours in his innings which brought the game back into the hands of Sri Lankans as they were now on 187/5 in the 35th over. The domino then continued falling for Sri Lanka as their last three batsmen on the day could only manage 38 runs in the final overs bringing their innings to a close at 279/8.
The Chevrons then came in to bat with a target of 280 to reach in order to win the match. Chamu Chibhabha and Sikander Raza then opened the batting for the Chevrons with only Chibhabha showing up as he had 22 from 22 with 4 fours in his innings. Sikander Raza did not have a good day as he only had figures of 7 runs from 18 and quite rightly was sent back to the dressing room. Hamilton Masakadza then walked to the crease for the Chevrons hoping to set up a partnership with the hard-hitting Chamu Chibhabha but it was not to be as the latter soon departed for his 22 runs leaving the Chevrons reeling at 35/2 in the 6th over.
Brendan Taylor came to the crease hoping to finally break out of his slump in form which might have seen him losing the captaincy to Elton Chigumbura. Hamilton Masakadza and Brendan Taylor then ran away with the match as Masakadza lifted his armpits hitting 8 fours and 3 sixes in his innings. Brendan Taylor then chipped in to help the big man who looked fired up today as he also had 6 fours which saw him reaching figures of 63 from 68 balls. Tillakaratne Dilshan forced the duo to an early divorce as Jeevan Mendis caught off his bowling with the Chevrons at 162/3.
Sean Williams then came in hoping to finish off the work in what was slowly developing into a nervy finish for the Chevrons. Hamilton Masakadza, the man on the day for the Chevrons together with Sean Williams managed to wrap up the match as Sean Williams hit 7 fours which saw him reaching figures of 51 from 46 at a strike rate of 110.9.

Sean Williams was the pick of the bowlers as he had three wickets with one maiden and 35 runs from 10 overs seeing out an economy of 3.5. Prosper Utseya who is currently bowling medium pace after his bowling action was deemed illegal by the ICC also had wicket to console him and an economy of  6.8 from 5 overs. Tawanda Mupariwa and Solomon Mire had a wicket each in the innings but Tendai Chatara was hit for 57 from 9 overs with two wides in the innings.
Brendan Taylor was quick to air his sentiments as he tweeted `Great win by the guys today against a very good team. Still early days but we are a new team that is confident and determined. `
