`Bring Back Our Cricket`

By Perkins T Bare

The appointment of Grant Flower as Pakistan`s batting coach has sparked the way overdue campaign to bring an end to the much awaited end of the disastrous reign of Peter Chingoka and his lads.

His appointment has been received with mixed feelings joy as though it is a step further for former Zimbabwean players in coaching at the world stage and also a pat on the back for the Flower`s following Andy`s `sacking` from the post of England`s coach.

On the other hand it was as well a final blow for the many hopefuls who were desperately hanging on to their faith as it is also a confirmation of what had been already a fact that it is the death of Zimbabwean Cricket.

Barry Manandi a well revered sports analyst and one of the many passionate individuals who are spearheading the campaign said `this is an attempt to rescue our cricket, it has been held hostage by some individuals` and this indeed true for the governance of a few people has been used to represent a whole nation without consultation of anyone whatsoever.

Mike Madoda his business partner also added on their popular programme Sportsline which has close to 30 000 fans saying to this saying that `We need to get the message across as far as Peter Chingoka or even the minister himself whichever way but some change is needed`.

The discontent has finally reached its boiling point with thousands joining the attempt to make the hash tag #BringBackOur cricket trend on twitter!

In terms of administration, Zimbabwe Cricket used to be the best run sports organization in the which yielded the desired results making it one of the most respected nations affiliated to the ICC. And now it is sadly a reflection of what it used to be.

Gone are the days when we battled for supremacy on the continent with our successful neighbors and a stepping stone for the newer nations to show that they have what it takes to be among the bigwigs of cricket.

Now ZC is just based on racism coupled with maladministration at its lowest levels and some few nicks to cover up the rot that now bedevils it.

The way forward for this once successful organization is to first and foremost put an ultimate stop to all the hogwash about politicizing the game that was introduced by Paul Chingoka for his raison d'ĂȘtre is now outdated and any more yup-yup about it would be merely an obsession and an outward show over the bad administration of the game.

Though he is somewhat accredited for `de-politicizing` the game, he then failed to make the project grow by ensuring that national team selectors had an eye for talent and not color which meant that he just took the organization back where it was the only difference being that it was now broke.

With Henry Olonga and his black armband protesters proving that ZC had been successfully converted into a political institution which then led to the game suffering greatly at the expense of some individuals who were forwarding their projects depriving the game of its progress for it was now going astray by pursuing a whole new venture.

The political appetite of ZC did not go unpunished so to say for both Australia and England decided that they would not tour Zimbabwe because of political reasons which was a blow to the organization.

Though the tri-series between Zimbabwe South Africa and Australia had been already confirmed, the prolonged absence by Australia from visiting Zimbabwe cost them greatly.

Australia`s tour brought in S3 million meaning the Baggy greens no show cost us a total of $12million whilst England`s tour brought in S5 million which meant that England`s failure to tour since ZC went political cost us a whopping $20 million which would have been enough alone to cater for the debt at ZC.

Another thing which has also led to this recent outcry was the rejection by ZC of the proposed ICC bailout package which would have seen the ICC having a stronger hold over the administration of the troubled association`s finances and though this act was just taken as another show of power by Chingoka and his `goons` that they had indeed personalized the game many people just let it slide like they had learnt to do so well to do with all the other mishaps.

Another thing for ZC is for it to sort out its internal issues and stop hiding under the banner of cheap. This is from the selection of players whereby they are two different selection criteria’s for the players based on race meant to enhance the number of black people playing the game.

This rot starts with the top administrators themselves and their wrangles which they cannot be mature enough to solve. Manase who was quite eager to try explaining the problem said `The problem is the unseen hand from the elders who still have the hangover from the past period and now come to interfere in the administration and the players`

The facts speak for themselves with the ugliest episode of this series being the public standoff between the former minister and senator, honorable David Coltart and the convenor of selectors Givemore Makoni who publicly defied a directive that a selector has to be a former player of the game.

This is the basic structures of the game set by our ministry and quoting former transgressions will merely sidetrack the whole issue for we are now becoming part of a revenge mission and in the process depriving the game of decent players.

Also if ZC is to reclaim its status then the fact that the entire ZC leadership is made up of black people does not even matter at all for what is of importance are the results which the current leadership has yielded which is a staggering 18 million dollar loss, 10 year absence from test cricket and not to mention the terrible play at the T20 World Cup losing to minnows whom they could have easily beaten with their second string back in the days.

What is also hilariously ironical was Mliswa`s statement that `It`s 34 years after idependence and yet we still talk of racism yet we transformed the administration from white to being black .Blacks are now in control and who can we talk of racism now`.(Oh really Mister? Really?)

Racism is discrimination on the basis of skin color and that then means that if any decision is to be made in favor of any color be it green, blue, pink or brown then it becomes racism and a mere change of the skin color does not change anything at all.

The late great Nelson Mandela who bravely fought to maintain this balance once said `I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination`.

This then shows that there has been some great irregularities in the selecting both the board and the players themselves and this has to stop immediately if we are to attain any glory at the helm for surely no one is above the laws of the game and the annoying race card is meant for the primitive thinkers.

This whole transformation at ZC was indeed necessary but where they lost the whole plot was when they decided to fight fire with fire for that basically ignited the whole squabbles and therefore their project was doomed from the start.

Also as noble as it seemed then they failed to do their basic job of developing the sport and that is making sure that we grow not only as a tribe or a clan but as a nation.

Even so if the recent player boycotts and early retirements show that the current board also failed to raise a patriotic generation which was full of pride by just representing the Chevrons and would vow to stick with the team through thick and thin but because they were busy pursuing a forgone agenda which they literally then dismantled therefore they did not do anything but just show us a home which they failed to take us to.

First it was `Reclaiming The Glory` then `Let`s Save Masvingo Cricket` then now hopefully be third time lucky for the lovers of the game in this revolt all in the space of a year all aimed at finally bringing an end to one of the worst disastrous eras in sporting history.
