Zimbabwe Cricket Announces Squad for Tri Series

By Perkins Bare

It’s the chevrons but its not the Chevrons, that was the order of the day as the duel between Zimbabwe Cricket and its players has reached a split with the mother body announcing a squad without 5 of its senior players. In the front seat we have Zimbabwe Cricket board in their suits and ready for business and in the blue corner we have the players themselves in their blue shorts and still whining over their unpaid salaries and threatening to boycott the match unless they are paid by the 25th of June or at least a settlement is made (that means a promise hey).

These have the backing of the former players who have served Zimbabwe Cricket for the rest of their lives like Stephen Mangongo who`s suing ZC for 19 years salaries (just how old is this guy???). So the two split after the dismissal of Heath Streak which was deemed as unfair and people calling for the dismissal of the whole board instead which then messed everything up as Zimbabwe is now facing dismissal itself from the ICC after one of their board members was charged with corruption which then leaves us to one wicket.

“Let me set the record straight: Brendan Taylor, Graeme Cremer, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza were not overlooked, but they did not avail themselves for selection," convener of selectors Walter Chawaguta told reporters at a press conference in Harare. "They were approached after not availing themselves for the selection process that we put in place and they personally gave me their word that they are not available until their issues are sorted out. Hopefully this settles the lies that have been making the rounds."convenor of selectors Walter Chawaguta said in a press conference yesterday.

This has been the dark cloud hovering over the series with players threatening to boycott the series if their demands are not met by the 25th of June. It has been quite a sad scandal at Zimbabwe Cricket as a lot of infighting between the players and the motherboard is now putting a whole series into jeopardy. But its quite important at this moment that Zimbabwe Cricket pays the players as there is a lot of cricket ahead to be played according to the future tours programme released by the ICC. Zimbabwe Cricket could potentially play.

Zimbabwe's Test fixtures include multiple encounters against Afghanistan and Ireland, but they will also travel for a three-Test tour of Bangladesh (January 2019), an away Test against India (March 2019) and home Tests against West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. On the ODI front Zimbabwe will play 59 ODIs and 50 T20I`s which include Zimbabwe's three-match ODI series against Australia, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan from June-November 2020.

The squad sees the return of Elton Chigumbura who could partner with Kyle Jarvis and Blessing Muzarabani on the pace attack. Bobby also makes a return and then we have Malcom Waller and 21 year old Brandon Mavuta on the spin attack. Chamu Chibhabha is set to open the attack on the batting front with Cephas Zhuwawo in what should be an aggressive opening but there`s also Hamilton Masakadza and PJ Moor who should come in as the third man anchor. What is going to be missed greatly from the batting line-up is the that depth in the batting line line-up as the middle order looks a bit shaky and he likes of Tayplor and Sikandar Raza are surely going to be missed for they`ve always held that ship  when there`s a collapse in the batting line-up.

The series starts on Sunday as Zimbabwe takes on Australia at the Harare Sports Club with the final set for 8 July. The Chevrons are then set to play Pakistan afterwards in a 5 match ODI series from 13-22 July at the Queens Sports Club.

Zimbabwe's final squad for T20I triseries vs Australia and Pakistan:
Zhuwao, Chibhabha, Chari, Musakanda, Malcolm Waller, Moor, Chisoro, Jarvis, Mavuta, Blessing Muzarabani, Mpofu, Burl, Mire, Murray, Hamilton Masakadza, Wellington Masakadza, Chigumbura
Head Coach : Lalchand Rajput
